
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 15
(By Mr. Speaker, Mr. Kiss, and Delegates Givens, Angotti,
Beane, Campbell, Capito, Caputo, Compton, Douglas, Doyle, Flanigan,
Fletcher, Frederick, Harrison, Hatfield, Hines, Houston, Jenkins,
Johnson, Kuhn, Leach, Linch, Mahan, Manuel, Marshall, McGraw,
Mezzatesta, Overington, Paxton, Proudfoot, Prunty, Romine, Rowe,
Smirl, L. Smith, Stemple, Susman, Thompson, Webb, C. White, Willis,
Wills and Wright)
Requesting the West Virginia Division of Highways to name that
bridge on Interstate 77 which crosses over West Virginia Route
16 in Raleigh County between mile 42.00 and mile 42.07, the
"Nurse Veterans Memorial Bridge."
Whereas, Hundreds of nurses from West Virginia have faithfully
served in military by caring for sick and wounded colleagues in the
armed services, comforting children and families in this country
and around the world, burying the dead, loyally supporting troops,
demonstrating humanitarianism, courage and compassion in carrying
out their duties proudly; and
Whereas, The history of West Virginia nurses in the military
began with the birth of the State, when at Wheeling Hospital in the
State, six of the sisters of St. Joseph Hospital of Wheeling who became nurses in the Grand Army of the Republic ministered to
soldiers from the Union and Confederate armies equally; and
Whereas, West Virginia nurses have been part of front line
operations when treating victims of the typhoid outbreaks in the
Spanish-American War, the flu epidemics in World War I, as well as
the establishment of the first station hospital in World War II in
Italy by a nursing unit from St. Mary's Hospital of Clarksburg,
West Virginia; and
Whereas, West Virginia nurses have made their home state among
the highest ranked in the country for volunteers in wartime; and
Whereas, West Virginia nurses have distinguished themselves and
their profession in service and provided examples of honor and
valor to West Virginia nurses and nurses around the nation; and
Whereas, In modern times, West Virginia nurses gallantly serve
in military and peacetime operations around the world from the
Persian Gulf, to Somalia, to Bosnia and Kosovo; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature hereby requests the West Virginia
Division of Highways to name that bridge on Interstate 77 which
crosses over Route 16 in Raleigh County between mile 42.00 and
42.07, the "Nurse Veterans Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways erect a
suitable sign or marker on Interstate 77 to designate the location
and name of the bridge; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to the Commissioner
of the Division of Highways, the West Virginia State Police and to
the Capitol Press Corps.
